Junior Dairy Management Contest

Tuesday, Sept. 18th 2012

A unique opportunity open to all 4-H, FFA members and agricultural high school students.    A $1,000 scholarship prize will be awarded to the top individual.  
 

 

The contest will consist of the following six classes:

 

Dairy Cattle Selection (Class 1) – conformation

 

Dairy Linear Type (Class 2) – select one of three animals which best answers questions on their linear type evaluation.

 

Bench Marks In Dairy Management  (Class 3)Using established benchmarks to evaluate DHI records  to compare two herds  records and benchmarks.

 

Hands-On Tools to Audit Dairy Management (Class 4) – Understanding CMT tests; scoring for body condition, lameness, teat end, and hygiene.  Also understanding Keto Sticks.   

 

Feed and Nutrient Management and Evaluation (Class 5) – identification of dairy feed ingredients commonly found on dairy farms and questions related to nutrient content, quality, feeding management, and nutrient management practices.

 

Dairy Farm Business Management and Milk Pricing (Class 6) – questions on basic farm business management principles, accounting, and current management issues and milk pricing.

If, due to unforeseeable circumstances, a class cannot be conducted as listed, it will be changed at the discretion of the Superintendent.
